Monthly Prizes
Media Herd developed the following prizes to bring attention to media members who have distinguished themselves during the previous month. Winners receive nothing. Media Herd will announce the first winners on Sunday May 25, 2008 and every month thereafter, unless Media Herd is on vacation or in the event that no media member has adequately distinguished themselves.
Media Herd is happy to accept nominations and/or suggestions for additional prizes.
CHICKEN LITTLE PRIZE
Fierce competition is the hallmark of this prestigious award. Winners exhibit heightened anxiety and dire pronouncements. Named in honor of one of history’s most notorious alarmists.
SGT. JOE FRIDAY PRIZE
The rise of the “Pundit Media” has made it difficult to select the winner of this award. Media Herd scours the landscape in search of original reporting confined to the facts. Winners must display zero to little opinion reporting. To paraphrase the controversial words of this award’s namesake - just the facts.
RIP VAN WINKLE PRIZE
We all know the story. This prize is awarded to the member of the media whose reporting or comments indicates they have been asleep for the past 20 news cycles.
IGNATIUS J. REILLY PRIZE
Named after one of Media Herd’s all-time favorite literary characters, this prize is awarded to the member of the media who fully embodies Ignatius J. Reilly’s bombastic, reactionary, contemptuous, self-aggrandizing, hyperbolic, contrarian, clueless yet brilliant and endearing character.
P.T. BARNUM PRIZE
Awarded to honor history’s consummate showman, prankster and circus legend.
HANS BRINKER PRIZE
Known by millions as the little boy who bravely held back the waters with his finger while waiting for help to arrive, this honor is bestowed on the media member who reports alone on matters of public importance.
