No matter that the death toll in China could reach 50,000 or that the official death toll in Myanmar now stands at 133,000, the media ALWAYS finds room in the eternally endless media space for carnival ride disasters.
Call it the Carnival Ride Butterfly Effect of the media herd, but just as the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Oregon can alter the path of a tornado in Kansas, so too can the collapse of the Yo-Yo carnival ride in Calaveras County, California determine the media headlines in Minnesota.
Raise your hand if you’re scared of carnival rides? That’s right! Everyone is scared of these damn contraptions. Thanks to the media, whenever we hear “carnival” we picture toothless yokels, bearded women and death-rides put up in the dead of night that sit like steel animals upon the landscape eagerly waiting to rip off arms and feet.
Bottom Line: Twenty people can get murdered in Los Angels County in one week (and week after week after week) and the media yawns, but all ye babes may sleep a peaceful slumber knowing that if a Yo-Yo goes down somewhere in this country, the media will be there to report it.
